Understanding Medicare Respite Care After a Skilled Nursing Facility Discharge

When a loved one transitions from a skilled nursing facility (SNF) to hospice care, families often find themselves navigating a maze of new terms, benefits, and care options. One essential—but sometimes overlooked—Medicare hospice benefit is respite care, a short-term support designed to give family caregivers a much-needed break.

At Sonder Hospice, we recognize the importance of caregiver well-being and are committed to guiding families through every aspect of hospice care. Here’s what you need to know about respite care under Medicare following a discharge from a skilled nursing facility.

What Is Respite Care?

Respite care is a Medicare-covered hospice benefit that provides temporary inpatient care for hospice patients, designed specifically to relieve the patient’s primary caregiver. It can be a vital lifeline for families providing daily care, giving them a chance to rest, recover, or attend to personal matters.

When Is Respite Care Available?

After a patient is discharged from a skilled nursing facility and enrolls in hospice, respite care becomes an option if the primary caregiver needs temporary relief and:

  • The patient is no longer receiving SNF-level skilled services.

  • The caregiver is unable to manage care for a short period (due to illness, travel, or emotional exhaustion).

  • The respite stay is not intended to replace long-term custodial care.

How Does It Work?

  • Location: Respite care is provided in a Medicare-certified inpatient facility, which can include a hospital or a nursing facility under contract with the hospice agency.

  • Length of Stay: Medicare allows up to five consecutive days per respite episode.

  • Cost to Families: Patients may be responsible for a small copayment—typically no more than 5% of the Medicare-approved amount or $5, whichever is less.

Why It Matters

Caring for a loved one at the end of life is one of the most profound acts of love—and one of the most exhausting. Respite care honors caregivers by giving them permission to step away for a moment, trusting their loved one is in expert hands.

At Sonder Hospice, we believe in caring not only for the patient but for the entire family. Our team coordinates respite care with precision and compassion, ensuring continuity and comfort during every transition.
